I know its been a while since i’ve done one of these lame mediocre blog posts but I felt like I wanted to express and write down some notes on whats not only been happening but what I’ve seen in the past 6 months when it comes to the creative/personal side of my life.
Going back in September/October timeframe while working at Stone Brewing as a graphic designer, I had the privilege to speak to several local SD design students.(You know who you are if you're reading this) Before i dig into what I said to them, I want to give some insight. Rewind a year and couple months and i was literally in their shoes (sorta still am) as in prepping to graduate design school, working on perfecting my craft or at least trying to to my best ability. After they toured the creative department at Stone HQ we went up the hill to the bistro and shared one or several beers (to kill time and not fight my commute 60 miles home) and the back and forth conversation I had with these students made worth every second i had to talk to them. Speaking about being young designer (especially in today’s sparse design career) and wanting to thrive on even more what you learn in the design classes you take and burn that midnight oil to exceed your design professors expectations and excel early on. Find a designer or group of designers that inspire you and reach out, ask for critique and bug them, the worst that could happen is that they tell you they don’t have the time to help (which out of the many designers i bug on a daily basis have yet to say that to me) and or they will tell you the honest truth on critiquing your work which if you want to become a good designer take it with all your heart. Soak that shit up after all theres a reason why you're asking that designer.
By all means, still to this day I don’t like half the shit I design. I make it work and i am passionate about it but we are our OWN worst critics.
Yet as myself still being young to the design profession. I will ALWAYS help those who ask for it. I’ve helped some get freelance, I’ve helped people on certain school projects. Hell, I might’ve gotten a very talented UI designer a new job this week. (fingers crossed)
As someone who inspires the shit out of me recently told me, “surround yourself with talent” Be consumed by it. It will pay off!
